JOB TITLE:                    SUPERVISOR OF SPECIAL SERVICES

JOB SUMMARY:            The supervisor of special services works in cooperation with the special services director as the administrator of the early intervention programs and assists in the administration of federal programs including federal/state/local programs.  Along with the director of special services, the supervisor participates in budget development, management, personnel, instruction, evaluation, and public relations services of the special services department.

 

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (May include but not be limited to):

  • Assist in the preparation of, and administer the program budgets, including maintenance of local, state, and federal grants.
  • Monitor implementation of policies and legal requirements established at local, state, and federal levels relative to special programs.
  • Report regularly to the director of special education concerning programs including recommendations for the next school year.
  • Participate in the selection of new staff.
  • Administer the professional growth program through in-service or advanced training.
  • Conduct staff meetings on a regular basis.
  • Perform personnel evaluation procedures according to the contractual agreements.
  • Develop the program schedules.
  • Assure compliance with rules pertaining to student discipline consistent with district, state, and federal policies.
  • Coordinate transportation for special education students with the support services department.
  • Confer about the welfare of individual students with building personnel.
  • Schedule and coordinate the instructional paraprofessional personnel.
  • Confer with parents to discuss the educational program as needed.
  • Contribute to the district’s information and public relations activities.
  • Perform other duties related to special programs as assigned by the director of special education and superintendent of schools.

 

MINIMAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Masters degree in special education preferred with training/experience in educational administration and/or supervision.
  • Michigan teaching certificate with an endorsement in at least one area of special education.
  • Minimum of three years teaching experience, preferably in special education, and two years administrative and/or supervision experience preferred.
  • Ability to obtain approval as supervisor of special education.
