Position: K-12 MTSS/Literacy Coach

Reports to: Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum, Instruction, Assessment, Innovation, & Programming



The MTSS/Literacy Coach will support all K-12 buildings in the implementation of Multi-Tiered Systems of Support and literacy coaching to staff with students not meeting benchmark criteria.   The Coach will support building leadership teams in the development and implementation of Multi-Tiered Systems of Support. The Coach will also work directly with teachers in a school providing classroom-based demonstrations, collaborative and one-on-one support, and facilitating teacher inquiry and related professional development. The Coach will also work with administrators and teachers to collect and analyze data, interpret, and use it to guide instructional decisions. 



  • Provides training, consultation, and support to administrators, teachers, and school-based leadership teams to facilitate implementation of a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) at the district and school levels. 
  • Assistance activities include observation and feedback, modeling, interpreting data and other supportive assistance necessary to implement a MultiTiered System of Supports.  
  • Assists in monitoring the fidelity of implementation of MTSS at the school level including both academic and behavior support systems.  
  • Work closely with the teachers, administrators to strategically create and implement a plan to increase student achievement in reading and writing.  
  • Assists in horizontally and vertically aligning literacy curriculum and oversee progress monitoring throughout the schools  
  • Work collaboratively with the school personnel to advise administrators and teachers on developing instructional strategies and intervention programs for struggling students.
  • Collaborate with administration to plan and deliver pre-service summer professional development for new and returning staff members aligned to high priority initiatives and outcomes in the area of literacy.  
  • Support the development of high-quality/effective ELA instruction in all schools, grades K-12; observe and coach developing ELA teachers to improve instructional planning, teaching practice, and the use of data, assessment, and instructional technology.  
  • Work with teachers to refine and develop common standards based pacing plans, mid-year, and end of year common assessments for each grade level.  
  • Work with various teams (administrators,teachers, department heads) to facilitate analysis of data provided by diagnostics, common assessments, and formative assessments. 
  • Assists in monitoring the process to ensure compliance and adherence to district procedures, state guidelines, and federal regulations. 
  • Provides MTSS staff development activities for school-based and district personnel.  
  • Attends professional development and district-level MTSS meetings.  
  • Models skillful use of data to inform decision making.  
  • Maintains cooperative working relationships with parents, staff, and other district personnel.  
  • Maintains effective and timely written and oral communication with parents, staff and other school personnel.  
  • Serves, as requested on district committees.  
  • Develops and maintains a positive rapport with families and staff. 
  • Maintains professional competence through professional reading and attending appropriate workshops, courses, and conferences in keeping with the needs of students and in accordance with district guidelines.  
  • Maintains regular attendance.  
  • Encourage parent and community involvement, obtain information for parents when requested, promptly return phone calls and answer emails.   
  • Performs other duties as assigned. 



  • A Multi-Tiered System of Support model and implementation of a MTSS model in school settings.  
  • Knowledge of research-based, best practices in literacy instruction 
  • Knowledge of K-12 ELA standards
  • Academic and behavior interventions to support high quality instruction for all students and to meet student’s individual needs.  
  • Measurement tools for various levels of assessment; including adaptive and curriculum-based measurement.



  1. Master Degree in Education, School Psychology, or a related field 
  2. 3 years teaching experience or related experience in the field of education 
  3. Valid Michigan Teaching certification 
  4. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
  5. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.  
  6. Knowledge and implementation of relevant technology.  
  7. Meet professional teacher education requirements of school, district and state. 
  8. Training in MTSS or equivalent experience 
  9. Experience implementing MTSS practices


Physical Requirements 

Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, operate a computer, hand-held learning devices and other office equipment, reach with hands and arms, and must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.


Safety and Health: 

Knowledge of universal hygiene precautions. 


Equipment/Material Handled: 

Must know how to properly operate or be willing to learn to operate all multimedia equipment including current technology.
