School Outreach Nurse

Plan and implement activities supporting Wayne County districts in developing and maintaining quality school nursing services through professional development, community partnerships, and other Whole Child initiatives that support school improvement. Provide training and support services to Wayne County schools to promote quality school nursing policies and services that safely, legally, and effectively address the physical, social, and mental health of students.
  
                                               

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:           
                                

  • Provide leadership and professional development opportunities for quality school nursing services to Wayne County districts and Great Start Readiness Program sites.
  • Serve as a liaison and resource advocate for school nursing services in Wayne County districts, Great Start Readiness Program sites, and partnering community agencies.
  • Participate as an active member of the Wayne County Whole Community, Whole School, Whole Child Alliance (WSCCA).
  • Disseminate relevant research findings and other information related to public and school health, school nursing practice, current legal issues, and new legislation that impacts school health programs and services.  
  • Disseminate model policies, standards, and best practices to promote safe, legal, and effective school nursing services.  
  • Collaborate as an active team member in organizational projects as assigned.
  • Work in conjunction with other RESA staff to ensure client needs are met in the most efficient and effective manner.
  • Collaborate with local school health advocates to expand the level of knowledge and understanding among educators, parents, and the general public of the critical link between health status and a student’s capacity to learn.
  • Plan, use professional judgment, and act effectively to carry out the functions of this position within the direction provided by RESA mission and goals and Educational Services goals and objectives.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education
 

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing required
  • State of Michigan Registered Nurse (RN) licensure required
  • Michigan Department of Education Professional School Nurse Certificate preferred

Experience
 

  • Minimum of three years practical experience working as a registered nurse required
  • Demonstrated experience working with the pediatric and family populations required
  • Demonstrated skill in effective problem-solving, decision making, and verbal and written communication required

SKILLS AND ABILITIES
 

  • Demonstrated knowledge of common chronic and acute health conditions in newborn through young adult populations required  
  • Demonstrated training, group facilitation, and process skills required
  • Demonstrated ability in developing and maintaining community partnerships preferred

Compensation: 

Current WCSSF 10-Month Salary Schedule – Schedule F - Effective July 1, 2019 ($54,321 - $82,212 FY) and a comprehensive and competitive benefits package including health/dental/vision/life and long-term disability insurance. Generous time off including 19 paid holidays, sick and personal business days. Membership in the Michigan Public Schools Employee Retirement System www.michigan.gov/ors. The position is represented by the Wayne County Salaried Staff Federation Local 4479 (WCSSF).
