Executive Director of Academic Services

Buchanan Community Schools is welcoming applicants for the Executive Director of Academic Services position.  The district seeks qualified applicants to develop, oversee and manage day-to-day operations of educational programs and services for the district.  Plan, develop and implement functions related to curriculum, instruction, assessment data, and staff development.   Use leadership, supervisory and administrative skills to provide sound educational programs for students and support to administrative colleagues and staff, with direct supervision of CTE programming.

General Description:

  • Assist in leading continuous improvement efforts in the school district.
  • To provide leadership for development and implementation of the district-wide curriculum, assessment, data usage, and staff development.
  • To assist the superintendent in long-range planning for the instructional needs of the school district.
  • To assist the superintendent substantially and effectively in the task of providing leadership in all instructional services.
  • Administration of district CTE programs.

The desired candidate must possess the following attributes:

  • Successful experience in supervision and/or direction of certified personnel in a school setting.
  • Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.
  • Ability to handle complex and stressful issues or situations with sound judgment, common sense, and a calm demeanor.
  • Impeccable character, and compassion for students, families, and all district staff.

Eligible candidates must meet the following qualifications:

  • Master's degree, Curriculum and Instruction or equivalent preferred, plus 5 years classroom experience
  • Valid Michigan administrative certificate
  • Previous administrative experience
  • Experience with federal programs preferred
  • Experience with data and assessment
  • Effective training experience preferred
  • Demonstrated experience in successful implementation of best teaching practices in at least one core area preferred.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Curriculum
  • Provide leadership in planning and conducting curriculum studies including special programs for new courses, funding, staffing requirements, and curriculum impact.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of instructional programs.
  • Oversee the selection of textbooks and instructional resources and provide guidance concerning textbook and other instructional resource usage.
  • Attend appropriate conferences, workshops and seminars and represent the school district on local, regional and state curriculum committees.
  • Prepare reports and materials to provide administrative staff and the Board of Education with information relative to the instructional program.
  • Implement/enhance communication networks to enhance delivery, implementation, operation and evaluation of the instructional program.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining a consistent philosophy of elementary and secondary education.
  • Work with staff in the implementation of the curriculum to obtain the developmental goals and student outcomes in the core K-12 vertical teams’ work.
  • Acts as liaison between the district and other agencies in regards to curriculum, instruction, assessment and professional development.
  1. Professional Development
  • Assist with professional development activities for the district, including P.D. for new staff.
  • Ensure a comprehensive staff development program, which addresses curriculum needs.
  • Coordinate teaching and learning coaches; coach teachers when appropriate.
  • Propose, in cooperation with the intermediate school district, staff development programs for all district employees.
  1. Assessment
  • Coordinate with Principals to manage state testing programs for district, i.e. M-STEP, SAT/MME, MI-ACCESS, WIDA/ELL Title III.
  • Coordinates with Principals to manage the local district assessment programs: NWEA, Delta Math.
  1. Career/Tech Education
  • Direct and supervise CTE programs for the high school program.
  1. Business & Operations
  • Assist the Executive Director of Business and Operations in formulating and administering the budget in the areas of curriculum and instruction.
  • Apply for and write grant applications.
  1. Communication
  • Assists with communications to the district's community and stakeholders.
  1. Central Office Team
  • Assists building-level school improvement planning.
  • Assists, as assigned, in the assimilation of information necessary to complete local, state and federal reports.
  • Attends board meetings and prepares reports for the Superintendent upon request.
  • Assists in mentoring and development of new principals as well as assists in developing leadership candidates in the event of future personnel transitions.
  1. Student Support Network
  • Assists the superintendent in establishing related services for students designated at-risk through the establishment of a Student Support Network
  • Attends special events held to recognize student achievement, and school sponsored activities.
  • Assists building principals in coordinating the district’s intervention programs.

Other Duties And Responsibilities:

  • Conducts other duties related to the curriculum, instruction, and assessment and other administrative responsibilities as assigned by the superintendent of schools. 
  • Must be able to transport between school buildings, districts and cities. 
  • Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory in specific field. 
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, staff and/or community members. 
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form. 
  • Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.
  • The duties and responsibilities of this position, as well as the configuration of this position or the addition of administrative assistant support, may be modified by the course of budgetary and staffing plans for the 2019-2020 school year.
