Elementary School Counselor – Ottawa School

Buchanan Community Schools is welcoming applicants for an Elementary School Counselor, Pre K-1.  The district seeks qualified applicants to assist assigned students per directives from the Elementary School Principal.  

The desired candidate must possess the following attributes:

  • Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.
  • Ability to handle complex and stressful issues or situations with sound judgment, common sense, and a calm demeanor.
  • Impeccable character, and compassion for students, families, and district staff.

Eligible candidates must meet the following qualifications:

  • Master Degree in School Counseling with valid license
  • Elementary Teaching Certification preferred but not required
  • Punctual and rarely absent work habits
  • NCLB Highly Qualified
  • Applies current research and theory to counseling program
  • Develops positive interpersonal relationships with colleagues, parents, and students 
  • Cooperative team player in any group setting

Essential Duties:

  • Provide school counseling services to students in grades Pre K-including delivery of a comprehensive school counseling program with emphasis on targeted students.
  • Successful experience with the use of a wide variety of behavior strategies and techniques as well as a data collection protocol for concerns
  • Provide support functions serving as the Homeless Liaison for the district.
  • Focus on enhancing the academic, career, and social/emotional domains of students.
  • Provide support for students and their interactions with school and community.
  • Conduct formal and informal groups for students, consult with teachers, and other school personnel.
  • Develop and analyze data to provide and plan for interventions.
  • Coordinate staff efforts to work effectively with targeted students.
  • Work effectively with parents of students on caseload including coordination of services with local agencies and our district Parent Liaison Program.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of strategies to promote effective student behavior.
  • Team effectively with counselors at all levels of the district.
  • Develops positive relationships with administration, colleagues, parents, and students.  Cooperative team player in any group setting.
  • Communicates regularly and  effectively with parents, staff and students
  • Maintain confidentiality of information regarding all students 


  • Experience in teaching or counseling students ages 3-7 (preschool-1st grade)
  • Knowledge and use of data driven school guidance counseling programs for planned, structured whole class, small group, and individual session work with all students
  • Develop and maintain appropriate and accurate academic and behavior data collection from meetings/counseling sessions with students, parents, and teachers to document student concerns, plans of action, and on-going progress to inform classroom practice, parental involvement, agency referrals, etc.
  • Elementary teaching experience Cooperative learning, conflict mediation and class meetings training
  • Effective experience in counseling individual students for academic, social, or personal development
  • Effective experience in facilitating small counseling groups on topics such as social skills, family issues and concerns, etc.
  • Effective experience in classroom presentations on school guidance related subject matter with instructional materials to meet student needs and school goals.
  • Experience in writing and implementing individual student behavior plans in conjunction with classroom teachers and other staff as needed.
  • Participate in extracurricular activities that are a part of the total educational experience for all children.
  • Participate in school committees events and programs designed to improve/enhance the overall school/district program.

  • Reports to: Building Principal, Mrs. Karin Falkenstein
  • Starting date: 2018-19 school year
  • Calendar: 2018-19 school year, 185 teacher days
  • Compensation: According to union contract, full benefit package offered
