Job Description

Position Opportunity:

Under the direction of the administrator, the classroom teacher is responsible for providing a developmental and instructional program for assigned students.  The Teacher will focus on development and implementation of student IEP’s, planning and implementation of daily instructional activities, monitoring student progress and providing consultation to staff, paraprofessionals, agencies, parents and administrators.

Qualifications:

  • Valid Michigan teaching certificate with special education endorsement in the area of Autism Spectrum Disorders or holds another special education endorsement and willing to obtain certification in the area of Autism Spectrum Disorder.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in programming for students with challenging behaviors and special needs.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and application of curriculum and behavioral interventions to utilize with students with special needs.
  • Ability to assess and accurately document student’s behavioral and instructional progress.
  • Self-directedness and initiative when given a variety of tasks and responsibilities.
  • Ability to make decisions and problem solve within a team of staff.
  • Ability to support, communicate with, and engage families as teaching partners.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and communicate effectively with administrators, staff, agencies, students and families.

 

Performance Responsibilities:

  • Provides and coordinates an appropriate, positive learning environment with a variety of activities and materials to support student learning and behavior.
  • Prepares and implements daily lesson plans and instructional schedules for assigned students based on Michigan Curriculum Frameworks extended benchmarks, grade level content expectations and individual student goals.
  • Develops and implements each student’s IEP, monitors student progress toward IEP goals/objectives, and periodically reports on this progress.
  • Establishes a classroom management plan that includes positive behavior supports.
  • Requests support from school social worker, or other related service staff to develop and implement behavior intervention plans.
  • Collaborates with therapy staff, including physical therapist, occupational therapist and speech and language pathologist, to incorporate strategies for mobility, sensory regulation and communication throughout the day.
  • Completes training and implements strategies in non-violent crisis intervention and works with the behavior team to address student behaviors.
  • Conducts regular communication between home and school and provides periodic home contacts with parents.
  • Provides information, resources and support to families and building staff regarding student needs.
  • Establishes and maintains positive working relationships with parents, support service staff, teachers, administrators, agency personnel, classroom paraprofessionals and transportation personnel to support student needs, issues, programming, services, school activities and transitions.
  • Completes and maintains student attendance, documentation and record keeping in accordance with district policies and procedures.
  • Participates in building level activities, staff meetings, in-service activities, program team meetings, student staffings and educational planning meetings for assigned students.
  • Identifies and monitors the specific job duties and responsibilities for assigned paraprofessionals to implement in support of student learning.
  • Works with physically impaired students, utilizing the tenets of the MOVE curriculum, to increase independence.
  • Follows the expectations of Ingham Intermediate School District and Heartwood School as outlined in staff manuals.
  • Assumes other responsibilities as assigned by the supervising special education administrator.

Working Conditions:

  • Works in a school environment, which includes classroom, office and related work areas.  Instruction is provided within the home, community, or educational settings as determined by an IEP.  Aggressive student behavior is part of the school environment. This position will interface with LEA and IISD staff, community providers, parents, and agency personnel.
