JOB TITLE:             ABE Math Instructor

SUMMARY

This is a part-time evening position—five hours per week, Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:00-8:30 pm. The teacher will instruct students whose math skill level is below the 6th grade level in order to prepare them to move on to study for their GED or earn their high school diploma.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned

  • Instruct adult learners using the ABE content standards developed by the State of Michigan Adult Education Taskforce.
  • Instruct adult learners working at Math grade levels below 6.0. Emphasize skill development in the context of workplace skills
  • Create and submit a course syllabus with calendar
  • Create a learning environment conducive to student success by using a variety of instructional teaching methods to meet the needs of the students
  • Provide support and encouragement to adult learners
  • Abide by the information contained in the Instructional Handbook
  • Complete and submit accurate attendance records after each class session
  • Complete and submit grades by the required deadlines
  • Attend required instructor meetings
  • Complies with State and Federal statutes and Board Policy.
  • Attendance and punctuality.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate.

  Secondary EX endorsement preferred.

  Experience teaching adult learners preferred.

  Experience in differentiated instruction and contextualized learning preferred.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.  Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations, and permutations.  Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Valid Driver’s License; required.

Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate
