Position Description

DEPARTMENT: Elementary School
REPORTS TO:  Superintendent

Provides instructional leadership to staff members including curriculum planning, review and implementation; and staff development. Responsible for building administration and the safety and welfare of both students and staff.


  • Interacts with students to encourage them to perform at their highest levels.
  • Provides general supervision of students. 
  • Supervises co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. 
  • Assigns teachers to classrooms and students to classes.
  • Manages and supervises all building staff personnel. 
  • Resolves staff issues and provides support to teachers.
  • Evaluates performance of teachers, other staff members, and programs.
  • Provides in-service training to teachers.
  • Is responsible for following all staffing compliance issues and highly qualified status.
  • Maintains relations with parents, parent groups, and school volunteers and outside agencies.
  • Implements policy and procedure changes from the Board, or the State and Federal level at the building level.   
  • Coordinates and is responsible for the school improvement process.
  • Works with other school personnel to coordinate processes for the effective functioning of the school.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or his/her designee.
  • Maintains current educational/administrative certification by successfully completing requirements.


Is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of the Elementary School.  Works with other supervisory personnel in sharing the supervision of all employees in the Elementary School.    Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees and students; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. M.A. and five years’ experience in teaching and/or administration.


Valid Teaching Certificate with E.S Endorsement, valid administrative certificate or qualified for administrator certification pathway as defined by the Michigan Department of Education.


Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, students, parents, and the general public.


Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.


Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.


Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory in specific field.  Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the community.  Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in spoken and written form.  Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.  Ability to operate a personal computer and related software.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk (often for lengthy distances), sit, and talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision.

  • Salary commensurate with experience.
