Position Details: 

Director of Finance - Portage Public Schools

Under the direction of the Assistant Superintendent of Operations, the Director of Finance prepares all internal budget forecasts using past accounting information. Provides leadership in business planning, accounting, purchasing, budgeting, fiscal reporting, payroll, risk management, investment oversight, and other identified financial processes of the Portage Public Schools.  Work is performed in accordance with Governmental Accounting Standards Board guidance, federal and state regulatory agencies, and other statutory requirements.

Select Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Direct the development of budget for internal discussion and adoption. Communicate short term changes that may have an impact on long term forecasts.
  2. Review budget and actual costs during the year, communicate significant short term changes to the Assistant Superintendent of Operations and Superintendent and lead the preparation of two (2) budget amendments during the school year.
  3. Monitor all accounting activities in General Fund, Building & Site, Bond Construction, Food Service and Internal Funds. 
  4. Coordinate two (2) membership count(s) which provide the majority of General Fund revenues.
  5. Lead activities to prepare for the District’s independent audit. Identifies and completes internal audit projects with assistance of other business office personnel.
  6. Oversee all business office functions including payroll, internal account management, cash receipts, cash disbursement, coordination with the human resource department, and general ledger maintenance.
  7. Maintain property/casualty, athletic catastrophic, student voluntary insurances of the District.
  8. Oversee Central Services functions including warehouse, mail room, receiving and delivery system.
  9. Obtain financing for bus purchases, equipment and General Fund cash flow needs.
  10. Oversee food service functions with third party management of the program. Provide direct supervision to the food service program director.
  11. Ensure that all transparency reporting is compliant with current State of Michigan requirements.
  12. Provide staff with support, resources, information, and training as needed to carry out the priorities of the organization and department. Lead multiple projects and support/motivate effective teamwork to produce quality services.
  13. Monitor payroll to obtain information for budgeting purposes.
  14. Monitor all state and federal grants, prepares grant reimbursement requests and final expenditure reports.
  15. Coordinate all budget development activities for programs managed through KRESA including EFE, EFA, and GSRP.
  16. Perform other duties as assigned by the Assistant Superintendent of Operations.


  • Bachelor’s Degree with Accounting Major.
  • 5 to 7 years of accounting experience.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or CPA candidate preferred.
  • Michigan School Business Officials Chief Financial Officer or Business Office Manager certification preferred.
  • Excellent oral and writing skills.
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Skilled in use of Microsoft Office Suite of programs, particularly Excel, Word, and PowerPoint and school financial reporting software. Experience with Skyward a plus.
