Position Details: 





  1. An approved Secondary Teaching Certificate
  2. An approved Master’s Degree in School Counseling
  3. At least two years of professional education experience.
  4. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board of Education deems appropriate and acceptable.


REPORTS TO:    High School Principal


PRIMARY FUNCTION:  Helps students to overcome problems that impede learning, assisting them in making educational, occupation, and life-long plans.



  1. Assists students in evaluating their aptitudes and abilities through the coordination, administration, and interpretation of individual standardized test scores and other pertinent data.
  2. Counsels students in developing academic, career/college, personal or social/emotional goals and the skills to accomplish them.
  3. Remains readily available to students and their parent(s) or guardian(s) to help them acquire the knowledge, attitudes, and skills to make informed decisions.
  4. Takes an active role in interpreting the objectives of the school district and uses community agencies to help attain the objective of supporting the “whole” child and his/her family.
  5. Informs teachers and other members of staff regarding the services offered through a comprehensive guidance and counseling program.
  6. Assists the principal(s) in scheduling students into required and elective classes through a thorough understanding of requisites necessary to meet future career, college, and life readiness.
  7. Organizes, plans, and implements an effective orientation program for all incoming students and their parents.
  8. Works with high school personnel in the transition of students from the middle school to the high school, including Educational Development Plans (EDPs) for every 8th grade student.
  9. Maintains appropriate professional decorum and norms with utmost confidentiality concerning students and families.
  10. Complies with all school district policies, rules, and response to crisis situations approved by the Board of Education.
  11. Attends staff meetings and serves on building and district committees (as requested).
  12. Performs other related duties, not in conflict with the Master Agreement, which may be assigned by the high school principal(s).



          School year as defined in the written agreement between the Petoskey Board of Education and the Petoskey Education Association



          Performance will be evaluated in accordance with the policy of the Board of Education and the Master Agreement between the Petoskey Board of Education and the Petoskey Education Association.
