Position Details: 

Whitehall District Schools is seeking a Director of Transportation.  This position will provide oversight and direction on a daily basis to the transportation staff. They will be the lead problem‐solver in this employment group. They will be responsible for the successful accomplishment of daily transportation routes, short and long range fleet planning and maintenance, student supervision and bus behavior, and communication of needs in the departments.

This person will report directly to the Superintendent of Schools and will collaborate with administrative team as necessary or requested. The ability to successfully lead, direct, and encourage all supervised employees to perform to their personal best will be an essential component for this individual.

A defined strength in mechanical/transportation would be expected of this individual, however, they would be expected and supported as they seek out additional learning opportunities in these skills.  Excellent communication and ability to teach appropriate bus culture to students along with an ability to share these expectations with parents.


  • High School graduate or equivalent
  • License or Certification
  • Possess or agree to acquire additional certifications as necessary
  • Possess and maintain a valid Michigan driver’s license and a good driving record
  • Qualified candidates must have, or be willing to acquire, a Michigan CDL Group A driver's license with applicable endorsements.
  • Effective analytical and problem solving skills
  • Must show evidence of good attendance and punctuality
  • Record of demonstrating initiative, efficiency and timely follow through on responsibilities.
  • Ability to work independently and achieve and maintain job productivity.
  • Record of cooperative and positive interactions with administration, staff, students and parents

  • Ability to prioritize and address multiple tasks and responsibilities

  • Ability to develop, maintain, and implement a transportation department plan
  • Ability to develop, maintain, and implement a transportation staffing plan
  • Maintain accurate records related to maintenance tasks and reporting as required
  • Maintain accurate records related to vehicle maintenance and safety checks as required
  • Design and implement annual bus routes
  • Communicate effectively with parents, staff, and others
  • Order required supplies to allow timely and efficient performance of preventative bus maintenance items related to facilities and transportation equipment
  • Observe fire and safety precautions and recognized operating and maintenance procedures
  • Observe all regulations related to student transportation and bus maintenance
