Position Details: 

Salary Range:  $59,462 - $75,821

Reports to:  Director of Physical Plant Services

Primary Purpose:      Responsible for the supervision and evaluation of bus drivers, bus aides, dispatchers, and mechanic staff.  Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the district’s goals, policies, and applicable laws. Full responsibility for the safe, effective, and efficient operation of the transportation department.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Interview, hire, train, direct, and evaluate all transportation staff.
  • Address complaints, resolve problems, and administer discipline.
  • Administer transportation-related student management and discipline, and collaborate with building administrators, parents, and guardians.
  • Maintain transportation eligible student data records including emergency contacts and special conditions.
  • Review, investigate, and respond to parental and guardian requests regarding bus stops, routing, and driver inquiries.
  • Collaborate closely with union leadership regarding contract, personnel, and disciplinary matters.
  • Provide and conduct in-service training for transportation personnel on legal requirements, safe driving techniques, safety equipment, work rules, practices and expectations, and district-wide initiatives.
  • Maintain and update required records and documentation for all transportation staff including personnel and payroll records; ensure completed payroll records are submitted to payroll department.
  • Operate and maintain computerized routing system including route development and student database management.
  • Ensure all district transportation equipment and vehicles are properly maintained and prepared for annual state inspections. Monitor and maintain transportation department budget.
  • Maintain bus inventory and condition assessment and recommend bus replacement schedule.
  • Maintain records for preparation of all required state and local reports such as inventories, pupils transported, special needs student data, route mileage, time records, traffic accidents, and related reports.
  • Review Michigan sex offender database on a regular basis and adjust routes and bus stops accordingly.
  • Conduct student bus safety and evacuation training for all elementary school students each school year.
  • Serve on administrative team, traffic-related committees and councils, attend professional development and training programs as directed, and remain current on certification requirements and industry standards.
  • Provide billing information to outside districts and private companies and business office.
  • Monitor road conditions during inclement weather and report same to designated person in charge.
  • Monitor construction problems and road closures to provide safe routes for drivers and students.
  • Be available for emergencies when charter trips go out on weekends. Take turns “on call” emergency phone monthly.
  • Fill in on driving routes when the department is short staffed.
  • Assume other duties as assigned by Director of Physical Plant Services or as implied by nature of position.

Qualification Requirements:

Education and/or Experience:

High school graduate or equivalent required; Associate’s degree or college-level education or training preferred; At least five years of experience in transportation supervision preferred. 

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

Possession of (or ability to obtain) a valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License with air brake, passenger, and school bus endorsements preferred.

Current Department of Education transportation supervisor and bus driver continuing education cards preferred (or ability to obtain).

Ability to be insured with school district’s insurance carrier.

MSBO Transportation Director Certification (or ability to obtain) preferred.

Language Skills:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or district employees.

Mathematical Skills:

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry. 

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.  Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Other Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of Word and Excel.  Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory in specific field.  Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and the school community.  Ability to speak clearly and concisely both in oral and written communication. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.

Occasionally, the position requires the employee to work irregular or extended hours, direct responsibility for the safety, well-being, or work output of other people, and meet multiple demands from several people.
