Starting Pay:  $50,000 (negotiable based on education & experience)

POSITION SUMMARY:
Michigan Virtual is looking for an online world language subject matter expert (SME) to design and develop two to four semesters of high school German content. The SME will work directly with the Michigan Virtual Course Development Manager (CDM) and will be supported by the Michigan Virtual Instructional Designer (ID) responsible for the assigned course(s). All work is to be done within the context of an instructional design framework, state and national world language standards, and within specific timelines. This work will be part of a team effort that will include others, such as multimedia contractors and course instructors. This is a fixed-term position.
 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Design or redesign web-based lessons that address the State of Michigan World Language Standards, ACTFL, and or CCSS;
  2. Write, develop and/or curate web-based content for the course, including formative and summative assessments, augmenting and extending digital content identified by Michigan Virtual, and specifying relevant multimedia content needs;
  3. Develop student and instructor support materials such as writing helps or answer keys;
  4. Review the course content in detail to assess its readiness for release; and
  5. Meet strict deadlines throughout the development cycle set by the CDM or ID.
  6. Other duties as assigned.

 
OTHER DUTIES & TASKS:

  • Meet with various stakeholders interested in the design and development of the world languages courses.

 
REQUIRED EDUCATION, CERTIFICATIONS, & LICENSURES (minimum requirements):

  • Bachelor’s degree in education including a major in German.

 
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE (minimum requirements):

  • Minimum of five years of experience teaching within the German subject area; and
  • Successful experience working as a curriculum developer or doing similar work in the area of course development.

 
DESIRED EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • Master’s degree in German;
  • Minimum of two years of experience developing online course materials;
  • High school teaching experience of three to five years or equivalent;
  • Experience teaching online is highly desirable;
  • Holds a Michigan teaching certification.

 
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES (minimum requirements):

  • Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills;
  • Demonstrated organizational and planning skills;
  • Demonstrated skills working as a member of a team;
  • Proficiency with productivity tools, such as Microsoft Office or Google Docs; and
  • Experience developing courses in Blackboard® or a similar learning management system.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively across cultural boundaries and work harmoniously with diverse groups of stakeholders, students, teachers, and staff.
  • Demonstrated commitment to contribute to a safe work environment.

 
DESIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:

  • Experience using content development tools such as SoftChalk, Articulate, or H5P.

  • The work environment is that of a typical office and/or classroom setting.
  • Sit in a normal seated position or stand in front of a computer for extended periods of time.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.
