POSITION SUMMARY:The role of the instructional designer is to produce online and blended team members and external clients in the course development process (analysis, design, production, implementation and evaluation). The instructional designer will use production tools such as Camtasia and Articulate Presenter or Storyline to produce and integrate online content, including those developed at Michigan Virtual and those licensed from other content providers, into the D2L Brightspace platform. The instructional designer also provides input about overall, systematic course development strategy on an on-going basis, in a manner that promotes sound instructional design principles.


  1. Manage the entire course development cycle for assigned projects.
  2. Establish appropriate timelines for self and external team members in order to meet project deadlines.
  3. Design and produce educational content and courses for use in online and blended learning environments.
  4. Provide consultation and coaching to internal and external customers on instruction sequence, engaging learners, community building (professional learning networks), interface design, accessibility, and formative and summative assessment strategies.
  5. Proactive consultation and collaboration with subject matter experts to identify and obtain instructional and learning objectives and content.
  6. Provide support to internal and external stakeholders in troubleshooting and resolving issues in existing and new courses.
  7. Provide maintenance support on courses.
  8. Use multimedia and instructional technology tools to produce educational content.

9.      Apply instructional design theories, practice, and methods into course design.

10.  Design and produce formative and summative assessments.

11.  Design and produce assessment and course completion criteria.

12.  Perform quality assessment and assurance reviews for courses.

13.  Gather, interpret and use course performance data to drive design decisions.

14.  Create and gather appropriate documentation (e.g. design documents, course descriptions and course syllabus) to support the design, development, production, implementation, evaluation and revision of courses.

15.  Consult and collaborate with team members and contribute to the continuous improvement of current design practices.

16.  Other duties as assigned.



  • Master’s degree in instructional design, educational technology, or other related field with 9 credits in university coursework addressing instructional design; and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience.


REQUIRED EXPERIENCE (minimum requirements):

  • Three (3) to five (5) years of experience as an instructional designer.
  • Two years or more experience with developing online courses.
  • Experience in adult education or professional development for K-12 or university professionals.
  • Experience with a major CMS or LMS (prefer knowledge of Blackboard, Moodle, or Brightspace LMS).
  • Experience with multimedia, graphic creation and content development applications such as Articulate, Adobe CS2-6 Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver), Camtasia, Audacity, Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) and SoftChalk.
  • Experience with some or all of the following:  HTML, CSS, Flash, browser compatibility issues, educational game design, web accessibility, and web content management tools.
